The Royal Family Exhibit displays the Serbian Americans immigrant heritage and authentic belongings of the Serbian Royal family of Karadjordjevic. The Serbs in Transition section of the exhibit gives a voice to the immigrants themselves, and bears witness to the courage and determination that enables Serbian men and women to leave their homes and seek new opportunities in an unknown land.
Opened recently by HRH Crown Prince Aleksandar II, the room is also homage to the last Serbian and Yugoslav King Peter II Karadjordjevic, who had been buried for the last 43 years at the Serbian Orthodox Monastery St. Sava in Libertyville, Illinois. The former King fled the Nazis at the start of World War II, and decided to stay in the U.S. when communists took over Yugoslavia at the end of the war. He died in exile at the age of 47 and for more than 40 years King Peter II was the only European monarch buried on the American soil. The featured exhibits are the authentic uniform worn by King Peter II and unique photographs of the Royal family.
